Superior, Wis.~ Tom Nesbitt of Thunder Bay, Ontario, won the sixth and final race of the AMSOIL Late Model Series Saturday night, but Pat Doar was crowned series champion. The huge crowd was electric as they watched 65-year-old Nesbitt win the 40-lap Late Model feature at the 17th annual Budweiser Northern Nationals.

Nesbitt recorded his 54th feature win at Superior Speedway after a great battle with Doar and Joey Jensen. Nesbitt took the lead over Doar at the start, with Jensen, John Kaanta and Joel Cryderman close behind. Nesbitt retained the lead despite pressure from Doar and Jensen after Darin Meierotto lost a wheel and caused the first re-start of the evening. Jensen took a brief lead, but Terry Casey spun out before another lap could be completed, giving the lead back to Nesbitt for the re-start.

Jensen and Nesbitt continued to battle it out, exchanging the lead three more times until the caution flag reappeared with five laps remaining, giving the lead back to Nesbitt at the re-start. Nesbitt had the better line off turn two and kept the lead, while Ashley Anderson crept past Jensen after slipping past Doar. Nesbitt hung on for the win over Anderson, Jensen, Doar and Kaanta. Doar’s fourth-place finish was enough to give him his first AMSOIL Late Model Series championship.

“What a great finish to the series,” said AMSOIL Race Coordinator Jeremy Meyer. “This race really showcased the amazing amount of talent there is in this region, which is what the AMSOIL Late Model Series is all about.”

Meyer praised all that were involved in this year’s series, and continually thanked the participants. “I can’t thank these guys enough for their involvement in the AMSOIL Series. Everyone from the local tracks and sponsors to the fans and race teams deserves a tremendous amount of credit for making this series a success.”
