AMSOIL Duluth National on the Move

Superior, Wis. ~ The fog came and put a sudden stop to the 2005 AMSOIL Duluth National at Spirit Mountain this past Thanksgiving weekend.  After a long delay due to fog and rain, the World PowerSports Association and the Duluth Convention and Visitors Bureau decided to postpone the AMSOIL Duluth National.

"Heavy fog obscured the track, and visibility was virtually zero,” PowerSports Snowmobile Tour Race Director Blair Bodley said in a news release. “Our riders would be racing virtually blind, so we chose to err on the side of safety, and stop the event. Though we are unhappy about postponing the events, we had to keep in mind the safety of our fans, our riders, and our officials.”

The Pro and Semi-Pro events will move to a full Saturday of racing at the December 17 event in Gaylord, Mich.  AMSOIL will still be considered the title sponsor for the full day of racing in Gaylord.

“We are disappointed that the weather couldn’t cooperate fully for Sunday’s Pro finals,” said AMSOIL Racing Coordinator Jeremy Meyer.  “We hoped the fans, the riders and the city of Duluth could have seen a great day of racing.  We thank the WPSA and Visit Duluth for taking the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of everyone involved.  We are very pleased with the WPSA’s decision to move the race and our sponsorship of the event, to Gaylord.”

Along with being the title sponsor for the Duluth event, AMSOIL is also the “Official Oil” of the World PowerSports Association.  AMSOIL also sponsors the AMSOIL/Scheuring Speed Sports team out of Aurora, Minn.  The AMSOIL team boasts top pro drivers DJ Eckstrom and Carl Schubitzke.

Eckstrom, who graduated from Proctor High School and is a Duluth resident, had a solid weekend of racing before the fog set in.  On Friday night, Eckstrom stormed from the back row of his Winter X Games qualifier to take the fifth and final qualifying spot for February’s X Games.  Eckstrom was also one of the top riders in Saturday’s Pro Stock class, taking home a win, a second and a third place finish in his three qualifying heats.

Schubitzke, also a Proctor graduate and a Duluth resident, found himself one spot out of qualifying for Winter X after a sixth place finish in his race Friday night.  Schubitzke had two-second place finishes on Friday night and another on Saturday before a broken chain took him out of the final Pro Stock qualifier on Saturday.
