Team AMSOIL Oval Ice Racers Find Success at Valcourt

Superior, Wis. ~ Team AMSOIL/Wanderscheid Racing rider P.J. Wanderscheid made his first-ever trip to the Grand Prix in Valcourt, Quebec. Wanderscheid rode his Eagle River World Championship-winning 440 Champ Sled to third-place and sixth-place finishes in two races over the weekend.

The Grand Prix at Valcourt is the region’s equivalent to the Eagle River race in Northern Wisconsin. Wanderscheid entered the weekend hoping to turn some heads and take some podiums on some new turf. After Friday’s racing was cancelled because of weather, Wanderscheid kicked things off Saturday with third-place and fourth-place finishes in his heats. Because the racing at Valcourt is so competitive, that placed him in the back row at the start. Wanderscheid battled multiple accidents and bad snow dust to finish sixth in the final.

On Sunday Wanderscheid finished second and third in his heats and took the hole-shot in the final, which was also the last race in the Oval Challenge series. In the end, Wanderscheid was able to finish third in the final and second in the Oval Challenge.

Team AMSOIL was also showing well in the Semi-Pro class at Valcourt. Rider Jason Smith, who runs full-time in the Eastern Pro Tour, came into Valcourt to compete with the world’s best.

Smith, who runs both Pro and Semi-Pro classes, started things off by winning his Semi-Pro heat and final. In the Pro class Smith finished his two heat races in fourth place. Smith started Sunday by winning his Semi-Pro heat race. In the final, Smith was leading when a crash caused the race to stop. After taking the hole-shot at the restart, a steering linkage failure caused Smith to slam into the first corner bails. Not one to sit things out, Smith borrowed a sled from Moyle Racing to compete in the Pro class. After winning his second-round race, Smith started the final in the back row and finished fifth.
