Wanderscheid Wraps Up WPSA
Team AMSOIL driver wins both Pro classes
Sauk Centre, Minn. ~ Team AMSOIL oval ice racer P.J. Wanderscheid had a mediocre weekend in Beausejour, Manitoba last weekend, but it was enough to solidify points championships in both the Pro Formula and Pro Champ classes of the WPSA Ice Oval Association.
Wanderscheid competed in two finals in the 600 class on Saturday, one being a make-up race from the WPSA Flip Merwin race. Since it was the last weekend of the year, and the points championship race was tight again this year, there was a big crowd on hand at the big Canadian track. The large track size made it difficult for the team to find the right set-up for Wanderscheid’s Arctic Cat, so they weren’t getting the hole-shots they are accustomed to. Wanderscheid finished fifth in the first final of the day, and followed that with a sixth-place finish in the second final.
On Sunday the focus switched to the Champ 440 sled, trying to find the right combination of speed and power that would allow a great hole shot, but leave enough gear for the high speeds required on the track’s long straight-aways. Wanderscheid finished the final in sixth, only a second behind the leaders. But somehow, a lackluster weekend doesn’t sting as badly when it is still enough to bring in another points championship or two.
“P.J. made good strides in Beausejour,” said AMSOIL Racing Coordinator Jeremy Meyer. “The team proved their durability under tough conditions, and P.J. brings home yet another pair of championships. I can’t say enough about this talented young man. He has already proven himself to be among the best racers this sport has ever seen, and he’s only 22.”
Wanderscheid’s pair of points championships will combine with his third career Eagle River World Championship in a display of dominance in 2006. Wanderscheid is already looking to next year, hoping to retain his solid position atop the WPSA Ice Oval Association.
Look for Wanderscheid Racing this weekend in West Yellowstone at the Second Annual Arctic Cat Snow Blast. The team will also be on hand at AMSOIL University in Superior, Wis., in May to sign autographs and meet with the AMSOIL nationwide Dealer network.
