Kincaid Captures 7th Pro Light Championship

The final rounds of the inaugural season of the Traxxas TORC series were slated to take over Las Vegas Motor Speedway, October 23rd and 24th. With Jeff Kincaid Motorsports top-notch Pro Light duo prepped and ready for action, the team packed up the hauler one last time, and headed west towards Las Vegas. Kincaid headed into round 15 with a 27 point lead over Chad Hord. The team arrived in Vegas Wednesday the 21st, to get setup, and ensure Jeff’s Traxxas, Forest County Potawatomi, BFGoodrich, Toyota Tacoma was ready to seal another championship. Friday afternoon brought two practice sessions for the drivers to feel out the new track. Kincaid decided to watch the first session from the stands to learn the track, and study his competitors’ lines. In the first session the track became extremely dusty, and became unsafe. The TORC officials decided to cancel the second session to better prepare the track for the main events later that night.

Kincaid took to staging for round 15, lining up in the third row on the outside as the 16 truck field staged two by two. The TORC Pace Truck led the field out for the two pace laps, and then pulled off on the back stretch as Mark Oberg and Casey Currie led them to the green flag. With racing action underway, Jeff wasted no time working his way towards the front. By lap 3, Kincaid settled into 2nd place behind Marty Hart. On Lap 5, Chad Hord pulled off with a broken axle, making it look as if Kincaid could remain in second, and clinch the championship. Jeff kept chasing down Hart, not satisfied with a second place, and was with-in a couple car lengths at the mandatory half-way caution. The field bunched back up, and took the green again. Kincaid continued to race hard looking for lines around Hart. With 3 laps to go, it looked as if Hart was starting to pull away. Kincaid’s left rear tire began to go flat, and by lap 15 the whole wheel fell off, sidelining Jeff for the remainder of the race. Hart took the win, as Kincaid placed in the 13th position. With Jeff’s DNF, Hart was able to pass Hord in the points standings, and pull within 19 of Kincaid.

Saturday, the crew went to work, fixing the damage from round 15, and checking the whole truck over to ensure Jeff would be able to finish strong, and clinch the championship. To win the championship Kincaid needed to take at least 13th position if Hart won the race. Later that night, Kincaid again took to staging, and lined up in the 6th position. The 16 truck field again entered the track for the pace laps. Oberg and Currie again led the field to the green flag to start the final round of racing of the 2009 season. Currie jumped out to an early lead as Kincaid waited patiently in 6th, assuring not to make any contact which would take him out of the race. Kincaid slowly made his way to the 5th position by the 3rd lap. Jeff’s Tacoma began to misfire, as he slightly fell off the pace. By this time there was only 11 trucks left running on the track, meaning that Kincaid could DNF, and still win the championship. Kincaid continued to drive hard, and even with a carburetor issue, Jeff maintained 6th position through the mandatory caution.

The field bunched up, and again took the green flag. Currie continued to lead the race, with Hart in second. Kincaid kept a fast enough pace to stay in the top six. Hart ended up having a steering problem after making contact with a wall, and started to fall backwards as well. Jeff held on to finish in the 6th position, clinching his 7th Pro Light Championship by 14 points. Currie went on to win, with Hord taking second, and Hart taking 5th.

The 2009 Traxxas TORC Series Champions Banquet took place Sunday October 25th, where Kincaid was officially crowned the TORC Pro Light Champion. Along with the Championship, Jeff won the “BIG BOMB AWARD” from Oakley, where Kincaid was awarded a four foot Oakley Bomb for winning the most fast lap awards in the Pro Light class. Jeff had 10 Oakley Bomb Runs, which was the most on the series, 3 more than Rick Huseman who had 7. With the conclusion of the season, Jeff announced that after 20 years in the Pro Light class, he will be moving up for the 2010 season. The final round of racing from the TORC series will air November 8th at 1:30 P.M. Eastern on ABC.
