TEAM AMSOIL SCORES A PODIUM FINISH AT THE SECOND ANNUAL SUPERBOAT/OSS GREAT LAKES GRAND PRIX
Michigan City, Indiana was the host of the Second Annual Great Lakes Grand Prix which was attended by nearly 100,000 fans throughout the festival weekend. The Race Pits were established in the middle of the festival at the water’s edge in the expansive Washington Park complex. Race Team displays were surrounded by various food vendors and live entertainment. Team AMSOIL also participated in a parade down the main streets of Michigan City, and a street party where fans lined up to get Team autographs.
Bob Teague participated as an announcer on the radio show that was broadcast on a local AM radio station and the World Wide Web.
Testing was conducted on Saturday with large crowds in attendance. Conditions on Sunday proved to be quite a bit rougher with winds of 18 to 20 MPH whipping up on Lake Michigan. The Super Cat Lite boats raced in the second and main event race. Once the green flag dropped, it was evident that the Team Stihl 388 Skater had an edge in the conditions with their set up. Team AMSOIL with Bob Teague and Mike Defrees worked to keep the Team AMSOIL Skater within close striking distance but remained running in a strong second place for the entire 80 mile race. The rough conditions provided for a great show for the tens of thousands of fans lining over 2 miles of Lake Michigan beach.
About two-thirds through the race while running in third place, Team Popeye’s lost control and flipped violently after hitting a large wave on the back stretch. The 368 Skater sank to a nose-up position soon after the accident. Stan Ware on the throttles, and driver Lisa Matthews managed to get out with Lisa nearly drowning after being hung up in the full time air hoses. Stan Ware was checked at the hospital and released while Lisa was flown to a trauma center in South Bend, IN. Team AMSOIL is pleased to report that Lisa has now been released from the hospital and heading home to Sarasota for some rest.
Team AMSOIL is currently in first place position in the SBI National Standings and OPA/Geico Series.
