Salt Lake City, UT ~ AMSOIL 125cc rider
Travis Preston won the AMA/EA Sports Overall 125 West Supercross championship
this past weekend. Preston was awarded the number one plate to be
mounted on his motorcycle for the victory.
The likeable Southern Californian had a 10-point lead going into this
last event. He only needed to finish fifth or better to secure his
first championship and the first for Superior, Wisconsin based AMSOIL.
By racing to a second place finish in the series finale at Rice-Eccles
Stadium the title was his. AMSOIL/Dr. Martens /Journeys /ONeal / Honda
team owner Rick Zielfelder called Preston a rock and said the teams
accomplishment was just beginning to sink in.
AMSOIL teammate Chris Gosselaar finished Saturdays race in seventh
place. The result left him just two points shy of finishing in third
place for the series. His fourth place was his best overall finish
to date. We are very proud to be a part of this team, said AMSOIL
Racing Coordinator John Schuldt. Weve been very impressed with Rick
Zielfelder since day one and we couldnt be happier for Travis, Schuldt
added.
This was the first championship for Preston. He came out of the gates
strong by winning Anaheim 1 back in January. He also finished second
at Houston and Phoenix. Gosselaar had been pushing Preston all season.
He finished third at Anaheim 1 and second at Anaheim 3.
The team moves on to Las Vegas for the last event of the supercross
season. The May 3 spectacle includes a shootout of the 125 West and
East riders. Teammate Michael Byrne of Australia will also ride in
the 125 event. He has been recovering from injuries suffered at Indianapolis
in round six.
