Canard Takes Win in Salt Lake City, Third Place Podium in Las Vegas

Canard WinThe 16th round of the 2009 AMA Supercross season, and the eighth and final round of the Lites Western Regional Supercross Championship, was held April 25 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. Team AMSOIL Lites racer Trey Canard was determined to finish the season on a high note, and he started the day by winning his heat race. After getting a good start in the main, Canard was in sixth at the first turn and proceeded to work his way forward. Chasing down eventual series champion Ryan Dungey and series runner-up finisher Jake Weimer, Canard cruised to his first win of the season.

“I’ve been feeling good on the bike over the whole break, and things seemed to come together for me during the week,” said Canard. “Seattle went good for me speedwise, and then in Salt Lake I just had another good day. I felt good in practice, got a good start in the heat race and won that, and that made me feel pretty good. I was pretty stoked on that. I started out with a decent start in the main, and the first corner got a little hairy, and I was about sixth and just slowly tried to pick guys off. I was a little timid around Dungey because I didn’t want to mess him up. I just tried to keep my head down and push through. I ran into a couple lappers near the end that hurt me, but the last lap was definitely a barnburner for sure. I was happy to get the win, though.”

In the 450 class, Kevin Windham fought through a mechanical issue to finish seventh.

Las Vegas, Nev.
The final round of the 2009 AMA Supercross season, including the Lites East/West Shootout, was held May 2 at Canard in VegasSam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. Team AMSOIL racer Trey Canard finished second in the 250 West riders heat, while teammate Blake Wharton finished fourth in the 250 East riders heat. In the main event, Wharton jumped out to the early lead, followed by teammate Canard, who passed Wharton for the lead on the second lap. A bobble on a tight corner cost Canard the lead on the 13th lap, and he eventually finished with a third place podium. Wharton finished 11th and Daniel Blair finished 12th. In the 450 class, Team AMSOIL racer Kevin Windham finished second in his heat race and fourth in the main event. He finishes the season fifth in the overall points standings.

Rinker Earns Second Place Podium in ChampBoat Opener

Rinker May 2-3The 2009 F1 ChampBoat Series presented by AMSOIL kicked off its 2009 race season the weekend of May 2-3 in Port Neches, Texas, where Team AMSOIL racer Terry Rinker began the quest to defend his 2008 championship. Rinker started the weekend by earning the fastest qualifier position and winning his heat race. In the main event, Tim Seebold grabbed a strong start ahead of Rinker and Shaun Torrente, but experienced some engine problems on the 17th lap that allowed Torrente and Rinker to pass. Torrente held on for the win, while Rinker finished with a strong second place podium. Teammate Randy Rinker finished eighth.

“We were a bit disappointed with our start after having such a great day yesterday, but we hung in there and the bottom line is we crossed the finish line on the podium and are just behind in the points championship,” said Rinker. “The AMSOIL team this season will be even more prepared at Evansville. I love the race site on the Ohio and am looking for a win in my home state when I return there in June.”

AMSOIL/Torchmate Team Dominates in Cedar City

Lovell and Kunz Finish Eighth at Terrible’s Town 250 in Primm
The AMSOIL/Torchmate team dominated both the Pro-Modified and Unlimited classes at the second round of We-Rock competition in Cedar City, Utah last weekend. In the Pro-Modified class, Roger and Brad Lovell were the only team to finish all the courses on Saturday, giving them a 24-point lead, while teammates Bill Kunz and Mike Shaffer finished the first day within the lead group. After both teams put together strong performances on Sunday, they had the two top spots wrapped up before the start of the shootout. It was just a matter of which AMSOIL/Torchmate team would take the win and which would finish second. While Kunz and Shaffer beat the Lovells by two points in the shootout, the Lovells earned the overall win. In the Unlimited class, Jesse Haines and Brian Howard found themselves in third place at the competition’s halfway point, then put together an amazing run in the shootout to earn the win.

Although their pace was hampered, Lovell and Kunz pushed the truck another 55 miles for an eighth place finish.
