HIBBING AMSOIL LATE MODEL RACE FIVE TO JOEL CRYDERMAN
Former Champion Wins Pitched Battle With Terry Casey
By Jerry O'Brien
Former AMSOIL Series Champion Joel Cryderman of Thunder Bay Ontario
continued his 2005 hot streak with a thrilling victory after a race
long battle with Series point championship contender Terry Casey
of New London, Minnesota. The two started the 35 lap feature side
by side with Casey on the pole. At the green flag the two engaged
in a fierce battle for the lead that began entering the first turn
on the first lap and would last for nearly the entire distance.
The pair quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the 25 car
field and raced off to settle the matter of whom would reach the
checkered flag first between the two of them.
At the initial green flag Casey held it wide open into the first
turn a little longer than Cryderman to take the lead showing the
huge Labor Day Shootout crowd why he has earned the nickname "Mr
Excitement." Following the fleeing duo were Jeff Broking, Series
point leader Pat Doar and a skirmish for fifth between Jeff Provinzino
and heat winner Bob Reed. For the first handful of laps the pack
went single file with Casey pulling six car lengths on Cryderman
who appeared to be waiting until they encountered traffic which
was three wide for position in some cases. Trent Follmer who had
started seventh caught Provinzino for sixth and they began to close
on Reed for the fifth spot. Casey reached the rear of the pack and
began to negotiate his way through as Cryderman tried to gain some
ground. Further back Follmer grabbed fifth and engaged in a skirmish
for third with Doar and Broking. Cryderman finally closed up on
Casey and tried some inside moves but was unable to close the deal
initially. The first and only caution of the event came on lap 26
when Nick Musel spun the Billy Nelson Racing number 44m off the
bottom of turn four.
The restart with nine laps of 35 remaining was single
file with Casey leading Cryderman, Doar, Follmer and Broking in
the top five. A nine lap dash to the $3000 payoff was just what
the crowd had been looking for as the green flag flew. Cryderman
dived to the inside of Casey in the first turn but was unable to
make the car stick as behind the leaders Follmer challenged Doar
for the third spot. As the leaders came by the flag stand, Cryderman
got a good run into the first turn and Casey appeared to bobble
and slip just a bit too high entering the turn. Cryderman's attempt
to take the lead was successful this time and as soon as Casey was
cleared, began to open up a three car length margin which he held
to the checkered flag. Casey was not challenged for the runner up
spot, but further back Follmer completed the pass on Doar for third
with as did Broking with Provinzino finishing where he started in
fifth. Reed, Mike Meger, Darrell nelson and Harry Hanson finished
in the top five positions.
