2019-2020 Snocross Opener
Mother Nature Wins Opening Rounds of AMSOIL Championship Snocross
Another season of Snocross action kicked off Thanksgiving weekend at Spirit Mountain in Duluth, Minn., with the AMSOIL National. Defending Pro Open champion Elias Ishoel was on hand to start his title defense, as was defending Pro Lite champion Hunter Patenaude.
The season started with the annual AMSOIL DOMINATOR head-to-head shootout on Friday. The event pits 16 riders head-to-head in a bracket-style format, with each one-on-one winner advancing one step closer to the $10,000 payday for the last rider standing.
Elias Ishoel defeated his three challengers, including teammate Aki Pihlaja, en route to the final round. Kody Kamm awaited Ishoel in the final after winning his first two rounds and taking the last-chance qualifier.
In the final, Ishoel and Kamm raced neck-and-neck down the front stretch before Ishoel jumped ahead. Kamm launched himself into the lead on an inside-corner jump, but Ishoel patiently regained the lead and crossed the finish line as DOMINATOR champion for the first time since 2016.
Blizzard cancels opening rounds
Unfortunately, a blizzard that dumped two feet of snow on parts of Duluth forced cancelation of the opening rounds of Snocross Saturday and Sunday due to hazardous road conditions and unsafe conditions for riders, personnel and fans. The season will officially begin with rounds three and four Dec. 13-14 in Fargo, N.D.
With the AMSOIL National canceled, seven race weekends remain on the schedule. AMSOIL Championship Snocross personnel hope to make up the snowed-out rounds at one of the remaining dates.
